Before exploring the sights, let’s dive into a bit of Malaga’s history<\/strong> to familiarize yourself with the city.<\/p>\n

Malaga was founded by the Phoenicians, who built a settlement near the hill where the Alcazaba stands today. Through its port, wine, oil and the famous garum, a sauce made from salted and fermented fish, were exported.<\/p>\n

The city experienced one of its greatest periods of progress at the end of the Middle Ages under Muslim rule with the construction of numerous mosques, the Atarazanas and the Alcazaba, noted for its production of raisins, dried fruits and earthenware with golden reflections.<\/p>\n

In 1487 Malaga was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs. The main mosques were transformed into parishes, and work began on the Cathedral. During the middle years of the 19th century, Malaga experienced a period of economic boom with the creation of numerous industries, especially iron and steel and textile.<\/p>\n

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Malaga experienced a deep social and economic crisis with the arrival of phylloxera and the collapse of its industry. After the bloody Civil War and the harsh post-war period, Malaga turned to the promotion of tourism, first with the development of the Costa del Sol and, recently, with the commitment to cultural tourism as a city of museums.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
